Hundreds of runners negotiated the cold, occasionally boggy conditions and a fence as they completed the Otago-Southland secondary schools cross-country relay at Tokomairiro High School yesterday.

The race, organised by the Otago Secondary Schools Sports Association, involved four laps of a 2km mostly off-road track.

It was held across six categories, as senior and junior runners took part in boys, girls and mixed sections.

The senior boys race was won by the Otago Boys' High School A team of Nick Pryde, Cam Miller, Matt Ogle and Nathan Hill in 24min 15sec.

They were followed by the Southland Boys' High School team of Buddy and Albie Small, Jaxon Taylor and Jack McNaughton, and the King's High School senior A team of Sam Gouverneur, Josh Aitcheson, Ben Kiore and Malachi Buschl.

The senior girls race was won by the St Hilda's quartet of Georgia Mitchell, Suzie White, Olivia Gold and Kate Higham in 28min 50sec.

The Otago Girls' High School team of Taylor and Jenna Thorne and Hannah and Lucy Matehaere was second, and Lilli Renner, Caitlin Deans, Gabby Trotter and Teigan Tarapi, of Columba College, claimed third.

King's High School and Otago Girls' High School won the boys and girls junior sections respectively, while Logan Park High School won the senior mixed race and St Peter's College, of Gore, claimed the junior mixed section.
