The 31st Balclutha half-marathon came to a close with a South Otago High School teacher being schooled by his own pupils.

Physical education teacher Jared Peacock, of Balclutha, ran in the 10km open men's section of the annual event yesterday.

He was beaten by three of his own pupils who entered to earn NCEA credits.

Peacock said the run was "bloody tough'' especially during the last leg up the hill on Cromer St.

He was not too fazed some of his own pupils beat him to the finish.

"They were always going to beat me,'' he said.

About 16 SOHS pupils were entered.

The winner of the men's half marathon, Jason Palmer, is also a teacher at the school.

He completed the 21km race in 1hr 10min 25sec which he said was 30sec slower than his personal best.

However, he said the Balclutha half-marathon was a much tougher course than others he has competed in.

"I'm happy with [my time].''

Palmer said the mild weather was an improvement on last year and a light tail wind helped the competitors throughout the run.

Those in the half-marathon started near Clydevale while everyone else started and finished at the Balclutha Town and Country Club.

About 125 people entered in the various running and walking events organised by the South Otago Athletic Club.

They consisted of the 21km half marathon, a 10km run and walk as well as a children's fun run.
