Basketball: Lethargic Falcons take off too late

Ajax 1 (3-1) continued its dominance of the women's winter league on Tuesday night, outclassing Falcons A (1-3) 80-40.

The Falcons were no match for their star-studded opposition, which has won every game it has played in the competition, losing one by default.

Ajax showed its form early on, holding a lacklustre Falcons side to just six points in the first quarter and five in the second.

Falcons did not trouble Ajax at all, and Janet Main and Jacqui Lodge (both 10 points) ran rings around the Falcons' defence.

Ajax held a 16-point lead going into the second quarter and it only got worse from there for a Falcons side that failed to spark.

A superb game from top scorer Aleisha Ruske (19 points) was a highlight of a clinical Ajax performance and the Falcons simply had no answer to the dominant Ajax attack.

Ajax led 51-11 at the halftime break and the game seemed all but over.

However, the Falcons showed their mettle and fired up in the third quarter, thanks in part to a fantastic defensive effort from Harriet Otley, who hauled in six rebounds and was strong under the hoop.

The combination of Jodie Hope (16 points) and Courtney Landreth (13) started to gel and the pair helped the Falcons make a dent in the intimidating scoreline.

The lift in tempo from the Falcons helped them win the third quarter and they held the rampant Ajax side in check, preventing the score from blowing out further.

Ajax headed into the final quarter with a 64-28 lead. The last quarter was a relatively even contest, but their lethargic first half left the Falcons trailing in Ajax's dust.

In the evening's other games, Magic A (3-1) suffered its first loss of the season, beaten 57-45 by an energised Varsity A (3-1) side, and Varsity B (1-3) notched its first win of the competition, beating Ajax 2 (1-3) 63-58.
