Basketball: Breakers out to even the ledger

More muscle, more hustle.

That was the message Breakers forward Tai Wesley expected to receive from his coach after his side was beaten 96-91 in a pre-season game against the Sydney Kings in Christchurch on Tuesday night.

The game had not been ''dissected'' when the Otago Daily Times phoned the Guam international for comment. But the Breakers are determined to even the ledger in Dunedin tonight and that means getting a grip on where they went wrong.

Wesley had a useful game, scoring 14 points and grabbing seven rebounds. But he was far from satisfied with his own effort.

''I don't think it was that good. I didn't play as well as I would have liked to, especially on the defensive end,'' he said.

''Their bigs had their way with us in the post. We have not really dissected [the loss] yet. We'll do that today but the general message we got was that it was not good enough.

''We did not reach the goals that we wanted to reach in that game and so it is time to have a short-term memory. We need to forget it and just do better.''

The Breakers are still trying to bed in a new defensive system and that presented some issues, particularly in transition defence. The team was slow to get back and was caught napping too often.

''It is going to take a little adjusting but we all understand that it can be better and it will get better.

''We have seen an improvement and, with more experience and time, we will get to where we want to be, I think.''

While the Breakers were disappointed with aspects of their game, there were some positives to emerge.

They had an opportunity to win the game but Josh Duinker made some clutch baskets and Tom Garlepp, who scored a game-high 25 points, drained a crucial three-pointer to put the Kings up by four late in the match.

''They hit a big shot to finish the third quarter which put them up three going into the break,'' Wesley said.

''Late in the fourth we tied the game up but, you know, when it came down to making big plays and players making big shots and getting big stops, they did it. That was the difference.

''We are a talented team, so we don't have to worry about offence too much. We have guys who can score on our team. It is just our defence that has to get better.

''But it was our third game. We are just coming together and I feel like we have something special.''

Both teams were missing some star power. Tall Blacks Thomas Abercrombie and Alex Pledger did not suit up for the Breakers and the Kings' big-name NBA signing, Josh Childress, also skipped the game because of an abdominal strain.

Abercrombie will have surgery on Friday to remove a hernia while Pledger is still struggling with a toe complaint.

Corey Webster top-scored for the Breakers with 21 points and Mika Vukona had a strong second half, adding 14 points. Classy American point guard Cedric Jackson struggled to find his range but chipped in with some handy rebounds and fine assists.

Tonight's match will be the Breakers' last hit-out before their season opener against the Perth Wildcats on October 10.

The Breakers will hold an open training session at the Edgar Centre today from 10am to 11.30am.
