Basketball: Bombers' defence key to win over Falcons; Varsity downs Saints

The Bombers beat the Falcons 79-72 in the men's club competition on Saturday.

The Falcons failed to produce enough offensive pressure to pierce the Bombers' consistent, tight defence.

While the Falcons had dominated the previous week, scoring layups in the paint, they struggled against a more wary Bombers side that repeatedly stopped layup attempts from Falcons centre Chris Hood.

The Bombers also tightly marked Falcons vice captain Chris Hood, which clipped the team's wings in the first quarter, at the end of which the Falcons trailed by seven points.

Star Falcons shooter Jacob Cromb dominated the second quarter for his side, and after three quarters, the Bombers led by just four and the game was anyone's for the taking.

The Falcons attempted to slow the Bombers' attack with some tight marking, but this led to a lot of fouls being conceded.

It was neck and neck through much of the final quarter but a combination of Falcons foul trouble and accurate Bombers shooting gave the Bombers the win.

The St Kilda Saints, defending champions, were beaten 88-63 by University A. Tom Ingram led the students with 21 points.

Benoit Hayman scored 22 points to lead the Magic A to a 74-71 win over Varsity A2.
