Basketball: Hiding each for Varsity, Ajax sides

Ajax 1 got its season on track with a blowout 79-17 win over Varsity B in the second round of the women's club competition on Tuesday night.

The defending champion was tipped over in round 1 by Varsity A but made a statement in this one, in all facets of the game.

The frontcourt combination of Nat Smith and Zoe Richards led the way for Ajax, scoring 20 points apiece and dominating under the basket.

Smith and Richards were particularly good on the offensive boards and gave their side a multitude of second-chance points.

Ajax's spacing was excellent and it moved the ball well throughout.

As a result of this, shooter Renee Johnson found herself open on a number of occasions behind the three-point line and chipped in with nine points.

Other Ajax players to stand out were Brittany Richards, who ran the floor well, and Aleisha Ruske, who fed her shooters all night.

Varsity lacked size and toughness on the inside and its zone defence allowed too many open shots.

Maddison Crawford battled all night, scored four points and was Varsity's best player.

In the late game, Varsity A had no trouble beating Ajax 2 59-21 in another one-sided affair.

Anita Snowdon led all scorers with 10 points and four other players each had eight.
