Basketball: Magic A dominant

Magic A proved too good for Varsity B in the latest round of the women's A-grade competition, winning 52-32 at the Edgar Centre in Dunedin on Tuesday night.

The Magic started the game on a 6-0 run before Varsity shooter Lily Purdon hit three of her first four shots from midrange to keep it close.

The Magic led 16-8 at the end of the first quarter, thanks mostly to the play of forward Grace Allan and guard Dayna Turnball.

The game got away from Varsity in the second and third quarters where the side scored just nine points, Magic's speed and intensity on defence proving too much for the students.

Allan led all scorers with 13 points while Turnball had 11 for the Magic.

Hard-working Varsity forward Gemma Grey led her side in scoring with 10 points.

In the earlier game, Ajax 1 beat Ajax 2 69-45.

Ajax 1 held an 18-point lead at the end of the third quarter but the defence of Ajax 2 was tight and it took four minutes before Ajax 1 scored in the final quarter.

Ajax 2 had solid defence throughout the game but it was at the other end where it struggled with multiple fast-break opportunities squandered and poor shot selection.

Stacy Hickford had a good game for Ajax 1, scoring nine points, while Nat Smith top-scored with 16 and Nicole Ruske chipped in with 8.

For Ajax 2, Katherine Ralph led the scoring with 12 points.
