Basketball: Magic A stifles Ajax 2

Magic A overcame an eight-point first-quarter deficit to beat Ajax 2 77-46 in women's A grade basketball on Tuesday night.

A 25-10 run in the second quarter propelled the Magic to the win and stifled any of Ajax's momentum.

The run came on the back of some excellent defensive pressure to start the quarter.

Forward Kelly Nafatali ran the floor well for the Magic and was strong on defence. She, along with centre Grace Allan, led all scorers in the game with 17 points.

Dayna Turnbull was also good, especially on the fast break, which led to the majority of her 16 points.

Point guard Giana Leoni led the Magic well in the half court.

Ajax played soundly but was unable to replicate its first-quarter momentum through the remainder of the match.

Cherith Schraag was the pick of the Ajax players with her hussle and defensive pressure.

Schraag finished with nine points, while Katherine Ralph and Abby Wolfe led Ajax with 10 points apiece.

The other match scheduled was between Ajax 1 and Varsity A.

Due to several Ajax players being involved with the Otago Goldrush in a national championship tournament over the weekend, Ajax 1 defaulted.
