Basketball: Varsity A too strong for its B side

Varsity A beat Varsity B 55-25 in an intense and physical women's A grade clash at the Edgar Centre on Tuesday night.

In a women's club round where no Goldrush players took the court, Varsity A started strongly with a 6-0 run.

Both sides were tough and physical on defence, which made it a difficult night for both teams on offence.

Each tried to run its respective sets but Varsity A managed to dominate and prevent Varsity B from finishing what looked like well-worked plays.

Varsity A held a 30-10 lead at halftime, thanks mostly to the defensive work of Claudia Flaws and Jill van Dijk, who led all scorers with 11 points.

Van Dijk was excellent under the hoop on both offence and defence and Stacey Costain's height proved valuable.

Guard Bianca Ah-Ken ran the halfcourt sets well and finished with nine points.

Varsity A coach George Robinson was pleased with his side's defence, especially Flaws' effort, and he was happy with how the offence performed.

''We shot really high, percentage wise,'' Robinson said.

He also heaped praise on guard Holly Lloyd, who had a fine game.

''She was just everywhere on the court, hustling,'' he said.

Varsity B captain Maddy Crawford had another good game in the middle for her side.

In the only other match played, Ajax 2 beat St Hilda's 61-39 after St Hilda's led 26-24 at halftime.

Natalie Visger top-scored with 12 points for Ajax.

Zoe Richards was best for St Hilda's, finishing with a game-high 14 points.

The match scheduled between Magic A and Ajax 1 was deferred.
