Falcons A (6-3) handed the short handed St Kilda Saints (8-2) their first on court loss of the season on Saturday.

The 76-53 win was powered by a dominant second half performance, in which the Falcons outscored the Saints 43-21.

After defaulting in week one, the St Kilda Saints had rattled off eight straight wins in the men's A grade competition.

The Falcons pounced to solidify their position below the table topping Saints on the competition ladder. Not even former Otago Boys' pupil and Canterbury Rams forward Sam Timmins, who was in Dunedin for the weekend, could keep the Saints' winning streak going.

Falcons guard Jacob Cromb led all scorers with 19 points, while Tyler Lapham (12 points) and Chris Hood (10) also scored in double digits.

Both sides struggled from the field in the first half, as the Falcons edged out to a 33-31 lead in a sloppy opening 30 minutes.

Matt Gillan opened the second half with a three pointer to give the Saints their first lead of the match since late in the first quarter. However, that was the last time St Kilda would lead. Lapham tied the game up with a free throw, before Hood also struck from the charity stripe for the go ahead points.

Lapham then connected from beyond the arc to ignite a 21 4 run to close out the third quarter.

While the Saints scored the first couple of baskets in the final quarter to pull to within 12, the defending champions never had enough scoring options.

Without James Ross and Tom Ingham pushing the ball up court, the youthful Saints were riddled with turnovers. Too much responsibility went on Damon Cleverley and Timmins, on whom the Falcons did a good job of double and triple teaming.

Timmins was restricted to 12 points, while Cleverley managed just seven. Gillan scored a team high 17 points. University holidays again impacted the competition. Varsity B defaulted to the Bombers, while the Magic A Varsity A match was deferred.
