Ajax 1 and Magic A flexed their muscles in the opening round of the women's winter league on Tuesday night.

Chasing an eighth straight title, Ajax 1 thumped club foe Ajax 2 79-27, while the Magic cruised to an 86-49 win over Varsity B.

Ajax captain Janet Main led all scorers with 22 points in her team's win, while Zoe Richards (18 points), Aleisha Ruske (18) and Stacey Hickford (15) also scored in double digits. Ajax 2 was competitive in the first half, trailing 32-22 at the split.

However, the deficit quickly ballooned in the second half as the students managed just two points in the third quarter.

Ajax then poured on 32 points in the final quarter, while Ajax 2 could muster only a lone basket in response.

Dayna Turnbull ensured the Magic got off to a fast start against Varsity B, scoring 10 of her 24 points in the first quarter.

The Magic led 25-8 after the first quarter, before extending its lead to 54-13 at the half.

Varsity B showed some fight in a much-improved second half, but the game was as good as over after the first two quarters.

Magic forward Grace Allan finished with 20 points, while Georgia Te Au chipped in with 13 points.

Varsity B's Bella Anastasiou scored a team-high 16 points. St Hilda's Collegiate, which has a bunch of players representing Otago at the national under-17 championships in Auckland, defaulted to Varsity A.
