Basketball: Gillan leads St Kilda Saints on march into final

The St Kilda Saints marched into the men's A grade final with their second comprehensive win over the Falcons in as many weeks on Saturday.

Matt Gillan continued his fine season with 27 points in the 99-66 win, a result that was never in doubt.

It followed last week's 81-49 win in the final regular season clash between the sides, but this game between the top two seeds was supposed to be closer.

The Saints were missing James Ross, who was at a wedding, and Nelson Giants forward Finn Delaney, who was at a New Zealand Breakers training camp, but Gillan and stand in captain Tom Ingham (17 points) ensured the Saints earned a week off before next weekend's final.

Gillan orchestrated the blowout in the first quarter by scoring 15 points to give his side a 33-9 lead after 10 explosive minutes.

St Kilda only managed six points in the second quarter but still went into the halftime break with a 39-23 lead.

Ingham sparked the Saints into action after the break, knocking down a pair of three pointers to open the third quarter. He killed the game off by scoring 15 of his team's 32 third quarter points as the score ballooned to 71-46 with a quarter to play.

The Falcons' season is not over but they will need to pick themselves up for a sudden death preliminary final against the resurgent Bombers this Saturday.

After barely sneaking into the playoffs with a 7-8 record, the Bombers beat Varsity A 64-60 in the weekend's minor semifinal to keep their season alive.

Last year's runners up used a dominant third quarter, out scoring the students 25-13, to build a 12 point lead with four minutes left on the clock.

Varsity rallied late to come within four points, but ultimately limped out of finals contention to the fourth seeded Bombers. Jan Verberne (13 points) and Olly Smith (12) led the way for the Bombers.
