Basketball: Familiar look to final

The St Kilda Saints and the Bombers will battle it out for the men's A grade championship for the second straight year this afternoon.

While last year's final was not even close - the Saints won 86-57 - the Bombers are expected to put up more of a fight today.

After barely sneaking into the playoffs with a 7-8 record, the Bombers have saved their best basketball for the playoffs.

The fourth seeds beat Varsity A 64-60 in the quarterfinals and the Falcons 75-65 in the semifinals.

The Bombers, who are yet to win a men's A grade title, could be boosted by the return of forward Max Jablonski for today's final.

He picked up a nasty ankle injury in June, but should be able to get through some minutes this afternoon.

The Saints streaked through the regular season with 13 wins from 15 games.

One of those losses was a week one default, while the other was a 76-53 loss to the Falcons in June, when the Saints were missing key guards James Ross and Tom Ingham.

St Kilda, chasing a second straight title and 16th since 1991, is a more complete team than the one that won it all a year ago.

The big three - Ross, Ingham and Damon Cleverley - no longer have to do it all on their own.

Liam Aston and Matt Gillan have provided plenty of support from outside, while Rene Sterk has been decent inside.

The addition of NBL forward Finn Dunleavy in the later part of the season makes the Saints scarily good.

Two of the three games between the teams this season went down to the wire.

The Saints won the first 63-61, the second 92-91 in a double overtime thriller, and the third 81-59.
