A strong first quarter helped the St Kilda Saints beat the Magic 100-67 in A grade men's basketball at the Edgar Centre on Saturday.

The Saints came out firing, scoring a game-high 27 points in the first quarter, including three impressive 3-point shots back-to-back, while the Magic struggled to hold on to the ball, ending the first quarter with 13 points.

This set the tone of the game, where the Saints held the lead and continued to dominate in the paint.

The Saints' defence was the key to the win, forcing the Magic to take wild shots at the hoop.

The Magic's captain, Ben Hayman, tried to keep the game alive by driving to the hoop, scoring 10 points.

Hayman said the team "lacked intensity and didn't get up enough''.

The Saints welcomed back ex-NBL player Ian Cathcart, who had a great first game of the season, scoring 24 points.

Cathcart said he was happy to be back and felt good about the game.

"Last time I played here, we won a championship, so hopefully we can do that again,'' he said.

The Saints' Liam Aston made some great jump shots, scoring 11 points, and was pleased with the team's performance and how everyone did their job.

Both teams were in foul trouble in the first two quarters but cleaned up after the half.

It was a clinical performance by the Saints: defending, rebounding and slick passing around the court, and always finding the open player.

In other games, the Bombers had a blowout, beating Varsity A 105-81, and the Falcons held on in a nail-biting ending to beat Varsity B 73-69.
