Basketball: France, Canada start with wins

France and Canada claimed wins on the opening day of the Philippines section of the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament this morning.

In Group B, which also includes New Zealand, France beat the Philippines 93-84. Nando de Colo led the way with 27 points, six rebounds and two assists, while Tony Parker had 21 points and six assists.

The Tall Blacks take on Philippines tomorrow morning, before facing France the day after.

In Group A Canada showed their credentials, beating Turkey 77-69. Cory Joseph was dominant with 21 points and five assists, while Tristan Thompson and Philip Scrubb each chipped in with 10 points.

In the Italy section of the tournament, Italy beat Croatia 67-60 to top their group, while Mexico beat Iran 75-70, setting up a must-win match against Greece tomorrow.

In Serbia, Latvia claimed their second win by beating Czech Republic 71-59 to top their group. Puerto Rico meanwhile were 91-81 winners over Angola, meaning Angola must beat Serbia tomorrow to keep their Olympic dream alive.
