Bowls: White assured of top ranking

Duane White's dream run this winter has put him in an unbeatable position at the top of the New Zealand Professional Bowls Association ranking list.

White (43), a member of the PBA for the past seven years, has emerged from the shadows this year to reach the top of the ranking list.

He has confronted an alcohol problem that affected his bowls in the past and is reaping the benefits.

White has won two events and finished runner-up in another in the first two PBA weekends this year.

The final round of the PBA is on the weekend of August 10-11. It will not be possible for any bowler to catch White, who has a lead of 61 points over Ken Walker (Fairfield).

The ranking list has significance because the top four bowlers on the list will automatically be selected for next year's transtasman test against Australia. One place is left for an invited player.

Two other Dunedin bowlers join White and Walker in the top 10. Mark Watt (North East Valley) is third and Aidan Lusby (Andersons Bay) equal ninth.

Walker, who was top last year, has dropped one place to second. Watt has retained his third spot.

Lusby, one of the most promising younger bowlers, has moved up two places from 11th last year.

The two wins by Doug Thomas (North East Valley) in the last round have moved him up from 54th last year to 14th.

Two members of the New Zealand team are in danger of losing their spots. Murray Glassey (Hawkes Bay) has dropped from second last year to 13th and Chris Lourie (Waikato) from fourth to 15th.

Former Dunedin bowler Richard Corry (Wellington) has returned to the top 10 after a long absence. He last appeared in a finals weekend in 2005.

He is a nephew of former Dunedin bowler Ian Dickison, who won the Commonwealth Games singles title in 1986 and a World Bowls title in 1988.
