National coach Dave Edwards expects a better performance by the New Zealand men when World Bowls is held in Christchurch in 2016.

World Bowls and the Commonwealth Games are the two big events on the international programme.

Edwards was disappointed by the results at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games this year.

''Our target was four medals and we got two. We got halfway there,'' Edwards said.

''As a selection panel, we are confident that there is a good pool of women players underneath the five who went to Glasgow. But we have some concerns and can't say the same thing about the men's game.

''There is the opportunity for male bowlers to put their hands up. It is a challenge for the guys.''

Bowls New Zealand is working on its two-year plan leading to World Bowls in 2016.

''We lodge an application to High Performance Sport New Zealand at the end of the month,'' Edwards said.

''We have a budget attached to the plan and they make the decision on how much they will give us.

''At the 2012 World Bowls, we had a target of four medals and we got five, but they cut our funding for the Commonwealth Games.''

Based on the past record of New Zealand teams, the funding should be on a par with that received in the lead-up to 2008 World Bowls in Christchurch, when New Zealand won six medals, including four golds.

''We have hammered that point home in the plan that we are preparing for High Performance Sport New Zealand,'' Edwards said.

''We would like to think that they will look favourably at our application.''

Bowls New Zealand had dusted off the 2008 campaign plan, he said.

''We have freshened it up, because the plan worked. It was based around centralising the players in Christchurch for an extended period in the build-up.

''The Asia and Pacific championships will be held in Christchurch, and we have a couple of transtasman events, and we plan to host a six nations event.''

All 10 players who represented New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games are available for World Bowls in 2016.

The star in Glasgow was Jo Edwards, who won the women's singles gold medal. It justified the decision to shift former singles player Val Smith to the team events.

The other New Zealand medal was the bronze won by the women's four of Selina Goddard, Amy McIlroy, Val Smith and Mandy Boyd.

The men did not win any medals. The best performance came from singles player Shannon McIlroy, who finished fourth.

The selectors will name a new squad of 10 men and 10 women after the New Zealand championships in Auckland in January next year, but the final selection for World Bowls will not be made until mid-2016.
