Dunedin's Jonty Horwell won 12 games in two days to clinch the national secondary schools singles title in Auckland on Tuesday.

Playing at the Howick Bowling Club, Horwell (16) beat Finbar McGuigan, of Aotea College, 21-13 in the final after dispatching Aiden Takarua, of St Peter's College, 16-8 in the semifinal.

It was Horwell's first national outdoor tournament, and his trophy will look good next to the national small bowl junior indoor title he won in Wellington in August.

Then, he beat Jakeb White (Counties) 8-7 in a tightly fought final, where he trailed by three shots with four ends left.

Horwell, who took up bowls about six years ago and has given up cricket and futsal to concentrate on the sport, also won the Otago junior (under-19) singles title with the small bowls in June.

Horwell, a member of the Kaikorai Bowling Club, earlier this week said he did not expect to win in Auckland, but added it was one of his goals.

He trains almost every day of the week, and when he does not have school he tries to train twice a day.

Horwell said he had aspirations to represent New Zealand in the future.
