The Taieri club's Wednesday-afternoon bowlers achieved a rare
feat last week when they won all their nine games.
Taieri manager and greenkeeper Robbie Gibson could not
remember when the club last went unbeaten in interclub
competition, but thought it was probably more than 20 years
ago.
Taieri and Fairfield both have nine teams in the interclub
competition and have the largest turnout each Wednesday.
Seven of the Taieri teams played against St Kilda last week,
with four games at St Kilda and three at home.
The other two teams had away games against Outram.
Rod St John was the skip in the biggest win of the day, his
team beating St Kilda 36-8.
The other team members were Denny Kennedy, Alan Ketchen and
Clarrie Thompson.
Bill McClenaghan's four had the hardest task and came from
behind on the last five ends to win the game 19-12.
They trailed St Kilda 12-8 but scored 11 shots on the last
five ends to win the game.
The other members of the team were Brian Gulliver, Kevin Dale
and Jimmy Downes.
The skip who has been a member for the longest time is
Charlie Burrell, who joined the Taieri Bowling Club in 1959
and celebrates his 50th year of bowls this year.
Life member Richie McDonald joined in 1972.
The other Taieri skips were Gerry Butler, Gordon Ramsay, Neil
Tomlinson, Robbie Gibson and Bob Davidson.
