Cherine Henry, of Dunedin, added a South Island Golden Gloves
title to her resume with a comprehensive 14-5 win over
Canterbury rival Tasha Brown in Gore on Saturday.
The light-welterweight pair had fought earlier in the year,
Brown coming away with the win on that occasion.
But Henry, a tall and lean fighter, used her speed and reach
to keep her opponent at a safe distance and landed the
cleaner blows.
The 31-year-old has been keeping herself busy, fighting twice
in a day at the recent Otago Boxing Association annual
tournament. She hopes to represent Otago at the national
championships in Wellington later this year.
Promising middleweight Chase Haley was not able to find a
suitable opponent in his class but defeated Jordan Bowman
(Nelson) in a match bout.
Cam Yung continued his impressive form, defeating Gage Brown
from Nelson to win the South Island light heavyweight title
and Chelsea McKellar stopped Micaela Sloan from Invercargill
to win the women's light welterweight title.
Martin Mech, of Queenstown, attempted to bounce back from his
defeat by New Zealand No 1 welterweight Bowyn Morgan at the
Otago tournament last month.
Mech took Morgan by surprise in Dunedin with his aggressive
style and the pair put on another fine show, Morgan winning
12-8.
Kem Christensen (middleweight improver), Brendon Ross
(lightweight junior improver), Thomas Bennett (lightweight
elite improver) and Nicole Key (lightweight improver) all won
titles, while Mech, Siraya Wilson (light heavyweight
improver), Ben Fraser (light welterweight) and Glen Craig
(heavyweight) were beaten finalists.
