Boxing: Fighters from Otago clubs claim seven titles

Otago clubs dominated the South Island Golden Gloves in Christchurch during the weekend, returning with seven titles.

Team Hammerhead fighters recorded six wins at the tournament - the most by any club - and secured three titles.

Kasib Murdoch won the junior male 60kg class while Duncan Roberts (91kg) and Jacob Ashdown (81kg) won their weight divisions in the elite male novice category.

Murdoch impressed the judges with his ring craft. He won a split decision in a closely contested bout against Kaleb Hauraki (A-Town gym, Christchurch).

He did enough to win the fight with his busy style and was named most scientific junior boxer.

Ashdown was drawn to fight Kallan Crawford (Craig's Boxing Gym) in the final but Crawford was injured during his fight against Michael Ross and had to pull out of the bout.

Fighters from Craig's Boxing Gym won five fights, with the Oxley brothers winning four of them. Baden Oxley beat Ash Warfield by KO and then stopped Mike Reeve (Waitaki) in the second round of the final to claim the elite male novice 64kg title. Patty Oxley also won both his fights to win the elite male novice 69kg title.

Callum Owen, from Queenstown, fought well but lost by split decision to Jarred Banks (Hamilton) in the final, while Richie Hadlow was ill and did not compete.

Dunedin's Fight and Fitness claimed two titles.

Kaitlyn Gibson won the women's youth 75kg title and Awatea Henry won the cadets 69kg title unopposed.
