New Zealand will leave the Commonwealth Games with a
record-equalling 22 pieces of silver.
Six gold medals and eight bronze were collected but it was
athletes stepping onto the second tier of the dais who made
up well over half of New Zealand's total 36 medals in Delhi.
It equals the country's record for silver medals, the 22 won
at the 1950 British Empire Games at Auckland.
While New Zealand finished 11th on the official medal table
-- which is ordered by the most golds -- they are fifth for
total medals won behind Australia (177), England (142), India
(101) and Canada (75).
New Zealand's medal gathering picked up pace in the second
half of these Games, equalling the six golds won at Melbourne
four years ago courtesy of the Silver Ferns' netball triumph
overnight (NZT) and inching ahead of the 32 total medals at
Melbourne.
India's prolific 11 days -- they picked up 38 golds to be
second behind Australia -- lifts them past New Zealand into
fourth place on the all-time Games medal table.
India have won 140 golds dating back to the first of 19 Games
in 1930. New Zealand are on 130, well adrift of overall
leaders Australia (727), England (516) and Canada (400).
