Otago wicketkeeper-batsman Derek de Boorder plans to make good use of his heritage this winter and is heading to the Netherlands with hopes of cracking the national side.

The 24-year-old Hastings-born player is not turning his back on his home country.

He still hopes to play for the Black Caps at some stage in the future.

But the chance to use his Dutch passport and play for club side Hermes DVS, and perhaps gain national selection, is too good an opportunity to ignore.

"Obviously, I still want to play for New Zealand.

"But I can play for Holland as well because they are an associate country," de Boorder explained.

"It is similar to what Dirk Nannes did."

Nannes played for the Netherlands in the Twenty/20 World Cup in June last year then played a one-dayer for Australia against Scotland two months later.

"It would be silly not to pursue this opportunity.

"It is a good chance to get some experience.

"But, at the end of the day, I'm just going over there to play club cricket.

"If the opportunity to play at a higher level presents itself then I'll take it."

Tom Cooper, a 23-year-old batsman who played for Australia at under-19 level, will also try his luck in the Netherlands.

Cooper has been a regular in the South Australia side this summer and de Boorder has had an impressive season with the Volts.

He set a New Zealand record and equalled the world record when he took eight catches in an innings in the last game of the season.

De Boorder will join Black Caps and Canterbury batsman Shanan Stewart at the club later this month.

Otago players Greg Todd and Nathan McCullum have both had stints with the Dutch club.
