The prospect looks promising for the return of top-level cricket to Alexandra's Molyneux Park after Otago coach Mike Hesson gave the pitch a cautious nod of approval yesterday.

The venue was removed from the domestic schedule following unsatisfactory pitch reports at the end of the 2008-09 season.

However, a twenty/20 and one-day fixture will be played at the ground this summer if the pitch comes up to scratch.

Otago played a trial match at the venue yesterday and Hesson's initial assessment was positive.

The Volts coach told the Otago Daily Times during the lunch break the bounce was consistent and there was some good pace in the pitch.

That finding will come as a huge relief to Otago cricket.

With Dunedin's University Oval out of action for most of the summer while work is carried out to expand the ground, the association desperately needs Molyneux Park to help take the pressure off the region's other venues in Invercargill, Oamaru and Queenstown.

New Zealand Cricket will have the final say and will base its decision on pitch reports from the captains and the umpires.

A prompt decision is expected.

Meanwhile, Hesson was content with the players' work yesterday.

The Redmond XI batted first and scored 150 for seven from its 50 overs.

Captain Aaron Redmond top-scored with 29 and the Broom brothers Darren (26) and Neil (25) chipped in useful runs.

Sam Wells was the best of the bowlers, nabbing three for 37 from 11 overs.

He got the ball to reverse and looked to have added a yard of pace, Hesson said.

Craig Smith also bowled tightly, taking two for 35 from 12 overs.

The Cumming XI took the honours, reaching 181 for six from its 50 overs.

Captain Craig Cumming led from the front with 59 and Shaun Haig compiled 42.

Mark Craig batted well for an undefeated 30 in a useful partnership with Andy Dodd, who was also not out, on 21.

Eighteen-year-old left-arm pace bowler Blair Soper stood out with three for 48 and shapes as an interesting prospect.

Black Caps offspinner Nathan McCullum had a solid day with three for 32 from 15 overs.

The teams will make some minor changes to personnel and play again today.

At the conclusion of the trial, the Otago selectors will name a squad of 17 or 18 for a warm-up match against Canterbury in Lincoln next week.
