Cricket: Duke dominant in Kaikorai victory

Some punishing hitting from Dan Duke and a solid innings from Willie Brittain lead Kaikorai to a 109-run win over Taieri in premier club cricket on Saturday.

An understrength University-Grange was no match for Albion. It was bowled out for 114 and lost by five wickets.

In the closest match of the round, front runner North East Valley was pipped by seven runs by an in-form Otago Country.

Carisbrook-Dunedin's poor run continued when it fell 49 runs short of Green Island's 225.

Kaikorai 306/6 beat Taieri 197 at Brooklands

Dan Duke brought up his 100 off only 51 balls and finished unbeaten on 111. Willie Brittain (75no) and Scott Hawkins (48) took Kaikorai through to 306 from its 50 overs. None of Taieri's bowlers was particularly effective, and last week's hero, Brad Frost, went for 83 off 9 overs.

Openers Ant Harris (51) and Tim Clydesdale (19) put on 47 for the first wicket, but Taieri fell well short as Kaikorai's bowlers eased through the rest of the order. Duke (two for 11 off five) backed up his batting heroics with a tidy spell and Iain Robertson (two for 29 off 10) choked the Taieri innings.

University Grange 114 lost to Albion 117/5 at Tonga Park 2

A blustery day at Tonga Park was not the only challenge for University Grange, for whom Nick Beard proved too good, picking up five wickets for only 25 runs. Once Beard had Michael Bracewell (45) caught, Grange provided no resistance and was all out for an uncompetitive 114.

Guilty of some carefree batting, Albion lost five wickets on its way to an easy win in the 27th over. Albion now sits four points clear at the top of the table.

Green Island 225 beat Carisbrook Dunedin 176 at Tonga Park 1

Jordan Sheed (65), Mark Joyce (29) and Jamie Munro (49) were a steady middle order for Green Island after its openers had fallen after making starts. Debutant James Welch (four for 35 off 10) had Sheed caught on the boundary and clean bowled Dion Lobb the very next ball to start a collapse during the batting powerplay.

Carisbrook Dunedin's batting woes continued as it lost wickets at regular intervals. Nick Eathorne (42) attempted one big shot too many and was bowled by Joyce (three for 37 off 10). Dan Willemsen (46no) was left to try to rescue the side from the lower order, but ran out of partners when Dion Lobb (two for 23 off 8.4) bowled younger brother Matt for 1.

Otago Country 233/7 beat North East Valley 226 at Molyneux Park

Otago Country claimed its second consecutive win in a tight encounter with North East Valley. Country's middle order of Jarred Andrew (41), Fraser Wilson (24), Cameron Rutherford (49) and Mark Knox (59no) were the core of the 233 scored in 50 overs. Jamie Murley (four for 42 off 10) was the best bowler for Valley.

It was a case of one batsman needing a big score for Valley, as starts from Anthony Wilkinson (42), J Ruwhiu (24), Hicks (56) and Gary Paine (36) were not enough to get past Country's total.
