Otago has taken off the whites and now gets down to the serious business of twenty/20 matches.

The side, which won the domestic twenty/20 tournament in 2008-09, only to miss out last year when the Central Stags won the title, is keen to get back into the winner's circle this season.

It will begin its campaign on Saturday against Wellington in the capital but before that will play a special fundraising game against Canterbury on Thursday night in Christchurch.

The game against Canterbury will be played at QEII park with funds raised going to the families who lost relatives in the Pike River mining disaster.

Otago coach Mike Hesson said the extra game was for a good cause and would also benefit the Otago team, which was coming off three four-day matches.

Hesson thought the side was shaping up well for the campaign.

"We are a long way ahead of where we were last year.

"We've been lucky in that we have had 12 days of cricket where we have played on three good surfaces and we have played well," Hesson said.

"I am pleased with the way we played against Wellington and the way we came back into the game and with a bit of luck might have taken it out."

The side had a long training session yesterday and will have a warm-up trial match match at the University Oval No 2 ground today, starting at 11am.

It was originally planned to play a trial game yesterday but Hesson opted for a long training session.

He said the side should not have any trouble switching from four-day cricket to the smash-bash version of the game.

"We are quite lucky in that we see it as a block.

"We can put four-day cricket to bed for now and the guys have had a day and a-half off and now can fully focus on twenty/20 games.

"It used to be a lot harder but the guys are used to it now."

There was stiff competition to get in the 13 which will travel to Wellington and Hesson said selecting the team would not be an easy job.

The squad has no injury problems.

After the match on Saturday, which will be televised, Otago will play Northern Districts in Oamaru next Tuesday.
