New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori will return after nursing a back injury to boost his side for the second one-day cricket international against India beginning tonight (NZT) in the Indian city of Jaipur.

Vettori and leading batsman and wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum missed the first game of a five-match series on Sunday which India won by 40 runs.

Speaking at a media conference overnight, Vettori said the performances by bowler Andy McKay, four for 62, and batsman Ross Taylor, 66 off 69 balls, were a couple of pleasing aspects from the first game.

"Andy McKay bowled quite quickly at the end and was able to trouble some of the Indian batsmen so that was good and Ross Taylor getting into a bit of form."

But the side had been unable to craft a win from opportunities created.

"We had chances to win that but like most of the one-day games we have played recently we just haven't captured those crucial moments and that's the challenge for us coming into this next game," Vettori said.

The skipper indicated he and Nathan McCullum would form a two-prong spin attack but the make-up of the rest of the side would be decided late.

Bowler Daryl Tuffey is returning home from the tour with a bicep strain with his replacement being either Tim Southee or James Franklin.

The balance of a side, already without Jesse Ryder who has left the tour with a leg injury, would depend on Brendon McCullum's availability because of his dual role as wicketkeeper and opening bat.
