Cricket: Decision reviews likely for January ODIs

Umpire decision reviews are in line to be employed during January's limited overs series between Australia and England after the ICC approved their use in matches leading up to the 2011 World Cup.

The system, which has previously only been made available for Test matches, has been incorporated for next year's tournament and Cricket Australia are now investigating whether or not it can be used in the one day matches that follow the Ashes series.

Reviews were made available for use in the limited overs format during this week's ICC chief executives committee meeting in Dubai.

"The ICC decision has only just been made and we need to take it on board and assess what it means,'' CA chief executive James Sutherland told AAP.

"Yes, we are interested in assessing whether it can be realistically introduced in time for the CBA series.

"As part of that, we need to liaise with the players and Channel Nine.

"We will have a look at whether it is feasible at this short notice.''

There has been plenty of discord surrounding the use of the system so far during the Ashes, with opinions varied over whether the current model of two unsuccessful reviews per team per innings is the right one.

Numerous instances of incorrect decisions taking place after both reviews had been attempted has led to concern that the system is less than ideal.

England coach Andy Flower spoke for many when he suggested umpires should be given greater power to check on video evidence for all their decisions.

"Whatever system we use is not going to be perfect and looking for the perfect answer is unrealistic,'' he said.

"We are getting more decisions right this way, so I think that we should use some sort of referral system.

"I'm not sure what the best referral system is, I think it would be interesting to trial a system where the umpires use it themselves.''
