Cricket: Drew to play 50th game

Both North Otago and Mid Canterbury have made changes from the teams that played first-round games - both against South Canterbury - for their clash in Oamaru this weekend.

North Otago, which earned first-innings points against South Canterbury, is without all-rounder Ben Cant, who has exams, and medium-pace bowler Paul O'Dell, who is out with injury.

Mid Canterbury, which beat South Canterbury outright last week, has lost opening batsman Dave Moore and Desi Kruger, who has returned to Zimbabwe for five weeks.

Former North Otago and Otago representative Marcel McKenzie comes into the local side in place of Cant, while opening bowler Dave Simpson returns to the side.

It will be a special match for former Otago wicketkeeper Duncan Drew, who will play his 50th game for North Otago this weekend.

Drew debuted for North Otago in 1994 while still at Waitaki Boys' High School and his good form in Hawke Cup cricket led to his being selected for the Otago Volts in the 2001-2002 season.

He played against the touring English side which included Andrew Flintoff, Andy Caddick and Marcus Trescothick.

Drew returned to North Otago in 2007 and last season was instrumental in bringing back the Hawke Cup with a fine 102 in a 91-run 10th-wicket partnership with David Sewell in North Otago's first innings against Manawatu.

For Mid Canterbury, wicketkeeper-batsman Matt Winter, who played in the game against Southland and who plays in the Christchurch competition, returns in place of Moore, while 17-year-old opening bowler Jack McDonald comes into the side.

Mid Canterbury coach Richard Pithey believes the outright win last weekend has increased the confidence of his side.

"We narrowly missed out on a first-innings lead but the guys refocused very quickly and we bowled and fielded very well," Pithey said.

"Certainly the pitch took a bit of turn but South Canterbury played very poorly hitting across the line.

We've got a left-arm spinner Ryan Cockburn and their batsmen, mostly righthanders, were caught out hitting to the legside or bowled."
