Cricket: All out for 18 marks low point in Dunedin club cricket

A new low?

North East Valley's grand total of 18 - yes, 18 - against Kaikorai on Saturday is surely a record low for the club and the senior competition.

But spare a thought for Auckland.

The 1877-78 side managed just 13 in a first-class game against Canterbury.

New Zealand famously stumbled to 26 all out in a test against England in March 1955.

Otago's lowest first-class score is just 34, scored against Wellington at Carisbrook in 1956-57.

But that is nearly three times what Oxford University (1877) and Northamptonshire (1907) could manage.

They were all out for just 12 in first-class fixtures.

Dunedin club records are sketchy but Taieri scored 28 in 2001, four more than its lowest score of 24.

North East Valley chairman Bryan Johnston believes 18 must be a new low for the club.

"It is the lowest score I've seen in my time, which goes back to 1968," Johnston said.

Otago Cricket Association operations assistant Tim O'Sullivan said the match had to be transferred from the Logan Park No 1 ground to the No 2 ground after water got underneath the covers.

"Poor weather has played a big part in the summer so far," he said in an email.

"Another week of very low scores is very frustrating for all."
