Cricket: McCullum slams ton as Volts romp to victory

Brendon McCullum ensured the Otago Volts finished their HRV Cup campaign in style tonight, blasting a century to lead his side to a nine-wicket win over the Northern Knights at Hamilton's Seddon Park.

Chasing a reasonable Knights score of 187, McCullum and Neil Broom  overcame the early loss of Hamish Rutherford - run out for a duck - to put the home side's bowlers to the sword and reach the target in the 19th over.

McCullum finished on 103 not out, while Broom also got in on the act, making 79 not out.

The pair were particularly hard on Black Caps Tim Southee and Trent Boult, who went for 47 and 39 respectively off three overs.

In the Knights' innings, former Black Cap Hamish Marshall top-scored with 86 not out, while another former international, Scott Styris, chipped in with 45.

Jacob Duffy was the pick of the Volts bowlers, finishing with  three for 19 off his four overs.

The Volts are out of contention for the HRV Cup finals and will now turn their attention to the one-day competition, which resumes on January 26.
