The New Zealand Cricket board has apologised to Ross Taylor for the way the captaincy affair was handled but is standing by the decision to make Brendon McCullum skipper.

At a press conference at the Basin Reserve in Wellington this morning board chairman Chris Moller, speaking for the first time on the saga which saw Taylor stripped of the Black Caps captaincy in Sri Lanka, said the board had met for five hours on Monday to discuss the issue.

It had also spoken to coach Mike Hesson.

Moller said NZ Cricket was investigating new material relating to the saga but won't say what it is. He also said the make-up of the eight-person board would be reassessed - there could be a change to six elected and two appointed members rather than eight elected.

Taylor has withdrawn from the team, which is about to depart for a tour to South Africa, saying he was "stunned" by the decision to strip him of the leadership role during a tour, and saying he needed a break from the game.

"The board remains of the view that it took the correct decision to support the captaincy change as recommended by the CEO [David White] and by the coach," Moller said.

"The board fully understands Ross Taylor's reasons for not going to South Africa and sincerely hopes that as our current best batsman, Ross will be available for the English tour this summer.

"The board sends its congratulations and whole-hearted support to Brendon McCullum as the new captain of the Black Caps and wishes him and the team all the very best for what will inevitably be a very challenging tour of South Africa.

"Despite the mistakes that have been made, and we all make mistakes, we are better people for it if we learn from those mistakes."
