The White Ferns have missed out on a spot in the women's
Cricket World Cup final today after a 15-run defeat against
England in Mumbai.
Chasing 267 to win, New Zealand set a solid platform at 191-2
heading into the final 10 overs before reaching 251-9.
Amy Satterthwaite scored 103, her second ODI ton, but when
she fell in the 44th over New Zealand wickets became more
frequent as their chances of victory faded.
A win would have meant little for New Zealand anyway after
they were ruled out of the final when West Indies handed
Australia their first loss of the tournament.
West Indies, who qualified for the Super Sixes after
finishing third in group A, beat Australia by eight runs to
reach their first World Cup final.
New Zealand and England will meet again in Fridays's third
and fourth playoff while Australia and the West Indies clash
overnight Sunday in the final.
New Zealand captain Suzie Bates, who made 79, said the side
found out during their innings that the White Ferns wouldn't
be making a fifth finals appearance.
"I didn't realise West Indies had won until I looked at the
scoreboard during a drinks break. It was disappointing."
