Cricket: Kaikorai bowlers trounce Uni-Grange

Kaikorai 102 beat University-Grange 31 by 71 runs
Young Kaikorai bowler Ricky Black took a remark-able five-wicket bag to dismiss University-Grange for an embarrassing 31 in Dunedin senior cricket on Sat-urday.

Chasing a mere 103 runs for victory, University-Grange would have backed itself to chase down the total with ease.

However, the team capitulated to some great bowling by Black, as he regularly took wickets to humble the Grange line-up.

Kaikorai batted first and had its own struggles. Grange bowler Cam Rutherford took five wickets from his 15 overs, with Kaikoraiposting a relatively low total of 102.

However, Kaikorai managed to defend the total, doing so comfortably.

Opener Jesse Simpson top-scored with 12 runs, with the next-best score only six.

Albion 284/7 beat North East Valley 86 by 198 runs
Mark Somerville hit a commanding 101 to help Albion post an imposing 284 for seven from 60 overs.

Batting first, Albion lost its first wicket early, that of opener Tom Dixon for a duck, but, despite losing regular wickets, the team pushed on for an imposing total.

Somerville and Blair Brown (50 not out) combined for an 89-run partnership for the sixth wicket, as the North East Valley bowlers struggled with consistency.

Chasing 285 for victory, the hot-and-cold North East Valley batting line-up went cold again, with its first seven batsmen each falling for less than 10.

Albion bowler Jamie Glenn grabbed a five-wicket bag, helping clean up the tail of the Valley attack and finish with figures of five for 35 from 12 overs.

Taieri 104/5 beat Carisbrook Dunedin 103 by five wickets
Five-wicket bags were the theme of the day, with young Taieri star Jack Hunter taking five for 46 from 18 overs to help steer his side to victory.

Batting first, Carisbrook-Dunedin had modest contributions from Sean Eathorne (23) and Tim McCormack (25), but wickets around them fell to leave the team all out for 103.

Taieri, which has enjoyed a much better second half of the summer, batted with promise to chase down the total inside 20 overs.

Opener Ash Simpson hit 43 runs and combined with Corey Hart (28) for an invaluable 58-run partnership for the second wicket.

Despite Carisbrook bowler Jordy Horrell taking the wickets of Simpson and Hart, the Taieri batsmen coasted home to record a comfortable victory by five wickets.
