Cricket: Fulton ponders tasks ahead

Canterbury captain Peter Fulton had some extra time on his hands last night.

The top-order batsman was hoping his side would break Otago's remarkable 11-game winning-streak in the HRV Cup at the University Oval last night.

The game, though, was abandoned without a ball bowled. The sides take two points apiece.

Fulton, who was hoping to have a bat on the surface before the first test against the West Indies in Dunedin early next month, cast his mind to the challenge ahead.

''I always enjoy playing on this ground and it would have been interesting to see what the wicket was like with the first test being played earlier in the year than it was last summer against England,'' Fulton said.

Fulton said he had been watching the test between the West Indies and India and it was hard not to think ahead.

''I've been thinking a little bit about who might play for them and the bowlers who are not there.''

Names such as Kemar Roach, Tino Best and Darren Sammy come to mind. Roach is sidelined with a shoulder injury at the moment but is expected to tour New Zealand.

Fulton had a reasonably productive time in Bangladesh, scoring 146 runs in the two tests, including two 50s.

The series was drawn which provoked some criticism of the Black Caps' performances.

Fulton felt fans had the right to expect their side to do better but pointed out Bangladesh was no longer the easy beat it once was.

''The expectations of the New Zealand public were that they want us to win. Regardless of how tough it is there, it is what people expect. So it was disappointing from that point of view not to win the test series and to lose the one-day series three-nil.

''If Bangladesh keep improving at the rate they are, in years to come they will probably be just as tough as Sri Lanka and India at home.''
