Cricket: Sparks make most of fine weather to notch up win

The Otago Sparks finally got on the field in a twenty20 match yesterday and it was worth the wait.

The first two matches of the Sparks' campaign in the shortest form of the game have ended in wash-outs - firstly in Cambridge early last month, and then at Lincoln last weekend.

But the side played against Central Districts at Alexandra yesterday, and had a comfortable victory, winning by eight wickets.

The visiting team won the toss and decided to bat but failed to show much with the willow, ending up on 104 for seven wickets after its 20 overs at Molyneux Park.

The only Central Districts player to make any impression was opener and White Fern Kate Broadmore.

She scored 62 and had made nearly 70% of the runs for her team when she was out.

CD had wickets in hand when it looked to charge in the last four overs but only managed to have players head to the pavilion.

Suzie Bates picked up four wickets as Central went in search for quick runs, and Victoria Abbott also managed a couple of wickets at the end.

With the target not too imposing, Otago could take its time and lost only Sarah Tsukigawa, to a run-out, and Katey Martin, in chasing down the total.

Martin scored 22 but Bates was the main contributor with an unbeaten 54, which included six boundaries.

Scottish import Lisa Kasperek was with Bates at the end on 17.

The side got home with 19 balls to spare.

The win doubles Otago's total on the points ladder, but it still sits third and may struggle to make the final because of the rained-out matches.

Otago and Central Districts will now play two one-day games over the next couple of days at Molyneux Park.

Otago has three wins from four games in the one day competition and sits second on that table.
