Cricket: Otago players getting used to living out of suitcases

Otago is on the road again as it takes on Auckland in a twenty20 match in Auckland tonight.

The side has been getting to know the ins and outs of motel rooms over the past couple of months as its opening part of the summer is full of away fixtures.

Since the season started in late October, of the 23 scheduled days of cricket the Otago side has played in both first-class cricket and twenty-20 matches, only six of these days have been on its home turf at University Oval.

It makes for lifting suitcases and the inside of airports but such are the vagaries of a season's draw.

Volts coach Vaughn Johnson was not too upset about the lack of days on the home track, saying draws change from year to year and all teams had to be played at some time.

Tonight it is Auckland's turn to take on the Volts in the HRV Cup and Johnson is sure the northern team will be wanting revenge after being drilled by Otago a week ago.

''I know they were hurting after that game. They will come out at us hard, I would imagine,'' Johnson said.

''It is a ground with some short boundaries, so that means the projected score may be a bit bigger than usual. Something around 200 needs to be looked at.''

The Volts had a commanding eight-wicket win over Auckland in Alexandra a week ago so should go into the match at Eden Park with some confidence.

The side missed a game last Sunday when its match against Wellington in the capital was rained out.

In the only change to the side which played at Alexandra, international Neil Wagner is back into the team, having recovered from a slight side strain.

Veteran Bradley Scott drops out of the squad.

With teams having played different numbers of games, it will be a few more days before it becomes clearer which three sides are in contention to play in the finals.

After playing Auckland tonight, Otago will journey down the North Island to take on Central Districts in New Plymouth on Sunday.

It will get back to the University Oval next Wednesday to play Wellington.

Canterbury beat Northern Districts by 11 runs in their HRV Cup twenty20 match at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui yesterday.

A breezy 44 from Tom Latham saw the Wizards reach 125 but the Knights could only manage 114 for seven in reply.
