The Otago Sparks had a resounding win over the Central Hinds in Alexandra yesterday and, with the victory, went top of the table.

Otago had a convincing twenty20 victory over the same side at Molyneux Park on Thursday and backed that up yesterday with a 97-run win over an outgunned Central side.

Otago piled on the runs when batting first after winning the toss, ending its 50 overs on 279 for five wickets.

The Otago innings was based around a fine 113 by Katey Martin, who came in at the fall of the first wicket in the 11th over and was still there at the end.

She hit 11 boundaries and brought up her century off 117 balls.

Martin combined with Scottish import Lisa Kasperek for a 168-run third-wicket partnership and the duo took the sword to all of the Central Districts bowlers.

Kasperek was out for 70, and showed the qualities which the Scot is giving to the Otago side.

Central Districts tried eight different bowlers but none showed much penetration.

Facing a target of 280 to win the game, Central was always going to do it tough against a solid Otago bowling line-up.

The visiting side immediately fell behind the run rate as opener Lisa Grant took 26 balls to score four before she was dismissed.

Once key Central batswoman Kate Broadmore was out with the score on 76 and more than half the overs bowled, the game was effectively over. Central ended on 182 for four after its 50 overs. The wickets were spread around by the Otago bowlers.

Central Districts opener Eimear Richardson had the personal satisfaction of getting a century for her side in its unsuccessful chase.

It looked as though she was going to miss out on the three figures but she brought up her ton with four balls to spare in the innings.

She was unbeaten on 102 at the end, having brought up her ton off 148 balls, hitting 10 boundaries.

With the match between Auckland and Wellington rained out, Otago leapfrogged Auckland to go top of the table, picking up a bonus point for its big win yesterday.

Otago will play Central Districts in another one-day game at the same venue today.

The Sparks head to Mosgiel next weekend to take on Canterbury in two one-day games and a twenty20 fixture.
