Cricket: Otago Country claims primary schools tournament

Otago Country won the South Island Primary Schools Cricket Tournament in Gore last week, and five of the team's players were selected for the Otago squad.

At the 51st tournament, Otago Country performed well in a rain-affected week, winning a match outright over South Canterbury, getting a first innings win over Marlborough and forcing a draw against Invercargill Metro.

Two other matches scheduled against Buller and Southland Country were abandoned because of the rain.

It is the first time in 12 years Otago Country has won the tournament and it also picked up the award for fielding and fair play over the week.

Coach Don Jackson said he was happy with the way his boys played and, while having five players named to the Otago side was pleasing, the win was the result of a team effort.

''It was a huge team performance,'' Jackson said.

''Everyone contributed and there was no one stand-out player.''

However, an 83 by Queenstown's Reece Collin against Invercargill Metro and a 56 from Cameron Jackson against Marlborough were notable individual performances.

Also, two boys picked up six wickets each over the three matches and 10 players took catches during the tournament.

The Wakatipu is well represented in the Otago side, Joel Malcolm-Smith and Quinn McDonald featuring alongside Reece and Cameron. Caleb Carson, of Balclutha, is the the fifth player selected for the squad.
