Cricket: Results key for Sparks

The Otago Sparks will need results to go their way if they want to qualify for the twenty20 final later this month.

Otago will take on Auckland in Auckland this afternoon in the final round of games for the domestic twenty20 competition.

But if it follows form, the heavens are bound to open and the match will be called off.

In its four previous twenty20 games this season, Otago has played only once and the other three have been called off.

Rain ruined the hopes of the Sparks last Sunday when they were scheduled to take on Canterbury at the University Oval.

With the one win and three games canned, Otago sits on 10 points, in third place. The top two teams go straight through to the final.

Auckland sits top of the table on 14 points while Canterbury has 12 points.

Otago first has to beat Auckland and then hope Canterbury loses to Central Districts in Palmerston North.

The Sparks may not be looking that far ahead and may simply want a clear day to play the game. The forecast for Auckland today is for brief rain in the morning and fine this afternoon.

The Otago team may be more focused on the one day games which will be played over the weekend. The side leads the one-day competition but has not yet confirmed a place in the final.

They Sparks have 33 points, Auckland is on 28 points and Wellington third on 25.

If the Sparks win one of the two 50 over games this weekend they will have qualified for the final, as Wellington will be too far behind to catch them. Wellington is playing Northern Districts at the Basin Reserve.

The games in Auckland are being played at Melville Park.
