Cricket: Holder added to predictable squad

Otago has named a predictable squad to contest the final of the twenty20 tournament in Hamilton tomorrow night.

Otago has simply added Jason Holder to its squad and will take 13 up to the match, which will be played under lights in Seddon Park.

Holder, who has been in the country with the West Indies team for the past month, was signed by Otago Cricket on Wednesday to play in the final.

His inclusion will most probably led to the exclusion of all-rounder Sam Wells and spinner Mark Craig from the team to take the park.

Wells has fielded well this season but has had a limited part to play with the bat and is not one of the frontline bowlers.

With Nick Beard developing into a fine slow bowler in the twenty20 game, Craig, also a spinner, is unlikely to get a chance in the final.

In a media release yesterday, Otago coach Vaughn Johnson said the conditions would be assessed first before any decision was made on the playing XI.

He praised the side for making it to the final.

''This group of players have done a fantastic job in earning us a place in the final, the opportunity to defend our title is an exciting one for the team,'' Johnson said.

''Our depth has been tested a number of times during the season, with players missing due to international commitments and injury. To top the round robin part of the competition is a testament to the ability of the players who have come in and willingness of the group to roll our sleeves up and fight each and every delivery ... to date.

''We are delighted that Jason is available for this weekend and excited about what he adds to this Volts team ... We have a number of options open to us and will be able to assess conditions before deciding which XI to put on the park.''

Northern Districts, which has used four imports this year, will take on Canterbury, which has a policy of not using any imports, in the preliminary final tonight in Hamilton.
