Cricket: Responsible innings key to victory

Green Island batsman Mark Joyce (70) played a responsible innings on Saturday that enabled his team to post a defendable total of 221.

Green Island 221/9 beat OBHS 136 by 85 runs

Green Island had struggled until Joyce partnered with Ben Patston (38) and the momentum shifted its way. Each of the Otago Boys' bowlers took a wicket, but the Green Island tail did well to make the most of the 50 overs.

Otago Boys' opener Will Kindley (58) started the reply in emphatic fashion as he pummelled the Green Island bowlers.

Gregor Croudis eventually got the breakthrough and dismissed Kindley, which proved crucial, as the innings fell apart for the schoolboys.

They lost six for 26 as a result of some determined bowling. Joyce backed up his effort with the bat with three for seven to top off a fabulous match for him and win the game for Green Island.

Kaikorai 142 lost to Carisbrook-Dn by seven wickets

A poor start and consistent loss of wickets meant Kaikorai could only score 142 against Carisbrook-Dunedin.

Captain Geordie Scott made a quick 41, which included two sixes, but his team was undone by a quality Craig Sneddon spell. The Carisbrook-Dunedin bowler helped himself to five for 41 off his 10 overs.

Carisbrook-Dunedin went about winning this game in an utterly ruthless manner. The Eathorne brothers, Kieran (56) and Nick (46), bashed Kaikorai all over the ground and looked in complete control.

They both scored at more than a run a ball and when the 100-run partnership was achieved, the outcome of the match was obvious. Charles Darling eventually dismissed them both, but the damage had been done.

North East Valley 209 lost to Albion 210/8 by two wickets

Top-order batsmen Tom Griffin (48) and Michael Rae (47) got things off to a superb start for North East Valley.

Rae was fearless in smashing the opening bowlers over the boundary before he was dismissed. Griffin played a level-headed role and batted the first half of the inning.

Jamie Murley chipped in with a handy 34 off 35 balls and North East Valley scraped through to a competitive total. Tim Ford was the pick of the Albion bowlers with three for 48.

With things initially looking bleak for Albion, Jamie Glenn took it upon himself to change the state of the match.

He looked dominant as he executed some exquisite cricket strokes on his way to 89, but was bowled with 17 crucial runs still required.

It was either team's game for the taking, but the Albion lower order did the job with two wickets in hand.

University-Grange 89 lost to Taieri 90/5 by five wickets

This match involved one of the more dramatic collapses in recent memory.

After being 56 for one, University-Grange crumbled and lost eight wickets for only seven runs. Matt McCallum did the majority of the damage, claiming four for eight. Brad Frost also took four wickets for Taieri.

The confidence was high in the innings break after such a commanding bowling performance, so Taieri went out to bat with intent. Ash Simpson scored 36 and the win was assured for Taieri. It reached the total in 24 overs with five wickets in hand.
