Cricket: Schoolboys teach Kaikorai a lesson

Otago Boys' 330/8 beat Kaikorai210 by 120 runsThe youngsters proved their worth at Bishopscourt on Saturday as they scored a huge 330 off their 50 overs.

The total included two emphatic hundreds by Rhys Bayly (112) and Josh Finnie (120), who were forceful and dominant in constructing a 227-run partnership.

The pair blasted the ball all over the ground and no Kaikorai bowler was spared. Finnie's ton came off just 89 balls and included six sixes. Ricky Black was the pick of the Kaikorai bowlers, taking four for 48 off his 10 overs.

Things started well for Otago Boys' in the second innings too, as Sam Angus helped himself to two early wickets.

Kaikorai batsmen Geordie Scott (46) combined with Iain Robertson who was unlucky to fall just short of his hundred, as he continued his exceptional form and made 97.

There were just too many runs to get for Kaikorai and the pressure to sustain the rising run rate became overwhelming.

This led to wickets and Otago Boys' dismissed Kaikorai 120 runs short of the target in what was an exciting game of cricket.

Albion 200 beat University-Grange 80 by 120 runs
University-Grange won the toss and sent Albion into bat, shortly afterwards it won the early impetus also.

The opening bowlers, Nox Taufua and Jason Hynes, both finished with three wickets apiece.

Albion struggled to form a partnership initially, but Jamie Glenn took it to the University-Grange bowlers and posted a superb undefeated 87 which stood out in an otherwise lacklustre scorecard.

He saw his team through to a competitive total of 200.

Once one fell for University-Grange, the rest followed in quick succession.

The Albion bowlers were simply dominant, paceman Michael Snedden and offspinner Riki Ashwell both had figures of three for 28.

The innings was wrapped up within 20 overs and Albion claimed the straightforward victory.

Taieri 103 lost to Carisbrook-Dunedin 106/6 by four wickets
The Taieri team were suffocating under the heat of the Carisbrook-Dunedin attack.

At one stage it looked as if the match would be over by lunch, as the Taieri batsmen slumped to 17 for seven. Craig Snedden claimed four for 24 and Tim McCormick three for 23.

A brave effort by Dwayne Weir (34 not out) and Regan Sleeman (30) saw Taieri hit the three figure score, but only just. Anything was possible after the onslaught Taieri suffered.

Sean Eathorne ensured the bowlers would be rewarded for their earlier efforts, though, and his 33 put the result in favour of Carisbrook-Dunedin.

It took its time to get there, however, and brought up the win six down in the 32nd over.

Green Island 313/7 beat NorthEast Valley 117 by 196 runs
A mighty 313 was posted by Green Island at Sunnyvale at the weekend.

An opening partnership of 128 was an exceptional way to get the ball rolling as Gregor Croudis (60) and Ben Patston (69) set the platform for the innings.

The scoring rate was favourable, notably as a result of some lower order hitting by Brad Scott who notched up a handy 55 not out off just 24 balls.

North East Valley opener Michael Rae was determined in scoring 72 off just 47 balls and gave his side a real chance of chasing down the huge target.

But no other North East Valley batsmen could contribute anything of substance, and when Rae was eventually caught, the score was 116 for seven.

Green Island brought the game to a quick end. Mark Joyce took five for 16 off his four overs, which included the scalp of Rae.
