Cricket: North East Valley blitzed by Kaikorai bowling, despite good start

North East Valley 95 lost to Kaikorai 100/2 by eight wickets.

North East Valley started well after being sent in to bat at Bishopscourt. Tom Griffin (17) opened with Adam Miles (47) and they were coasting at 73 for one.

This was short-lived, however, as a barrage of wickets fell in emphatic style. Offspinner Hamish Robertson bamboozled the North East Valley lower order as Kaikorai claimed seven wickets for 20 runs. Robertson finished with a remarkable six for 11 off his seven overs.

The domination continued for Kaikorai with the bat, despite a fired-up Sam Blakely dismissing the openers. Matt Hunter (32 not out) and Iain Robertson (55 not out) put the result beyond doubt for North East Valley, as they smashed their way to the total in just 13 overs.

Carisbrook-Dunedin 160 lost to Green Island 162/9 by one wicket

Carisbrook-Dunedin's innings had potential before a collapse hampered its efforts. Kieran Eathorne (50) was solid as a rock but eventually fell to the bowling of Mark Joyce.

So did many of his teammates as the Green Island bowler helped himself to six for 42, and Carisbrook-Dunedin was restricted to 160.

Green Island also got off to a good start and the openers put on 48 for the first wicket. Momentum swung back and forth.

Tim McCormick and Rhys Phillips bowled well for Carisbrook-Dunedin, taking four wickets each. But a fighting effort from lower-order batsman Dion Lobb (28 not out) enabled Green Island to scrape through with one wicket in hand.

Taieri 81 lost to University-Grange 82/6 by four wickets

The winner was inevitable from early in the game at Brooklands. Taieri looked a shambles at 14 for four. Cam Rutherford was lethal in taking four for 22 and was responsible for the early damage. A minor fightback took place when Elliot Hornbrook (23) was at the crease but the end was always in sight.

When opener Alex Fill made 24, the win was guaranteed for University-Grange, though it still lost six wickets. Brad Frost was the shining light in the Taieri performance, taking five wickets for 15.

Otago Boys' 196 lost to Albion 197/3 by seven wickets

It was an entertaining game at Tonga Park between the young guns and a strong Albion side. Otago Boys' batted first and opener Will Kindley (92) performed superbly.

His knock included 11 boundaries. Michael Snedden led the bowling effort for Albion and took four for 41 as the schoolboys were dismissed for a competitive 196.

Albion batsman Dan Duke looked assertive and fearless as he bludgeoned 90 runs off just 79 balls. He put on 113 for the first wicket with Tom Dixon (23). Jack Harper (31) chipped in to finish the job off for Albion.
