Cricket: Eyes on McCullum took the pressure off Neesham

''No-one was there to see me bat.''

Black Caps and Otago all-rounder Jimmy Neesham has used that line more than once in the past week or so.

It is true, of course. The Basin Reserve swelled on the morning of the last day of the second test against India earlier this month.

Everybody was there to, hopefully, see Brendon McCullum create history and post the first triple century by a New Zealand batsman. He did not disappoint.

Such was the feeling of anticipation, McCullum got a standing ovation on his way out to bat. Neesham was there with him. Walking alongside his captain and soaking in the marvellous atmosphere as the pair made their way out to the middle.''

It is obviously a special moment when you get a crowd like that for test cricket,'' Neesham said.''

They are a lot more into it than limit-overs crowds - and there was this massive sense of anticipation growing around the ground.''

The fact no-one was there to see Neesham actually helped relieve the pressure he was feeling about his own approaching milestone.

''I think I was more nervous for Brendon, actually. It was quite a weird sort of a feeling. You always think about approaching your first test hundred and think that the nerves will be overwhelming. But having Baz there so close to his milestone took the focus off myself.

"I mainly wanted to be out there for the moment he got his 300, so I was just concentrating on still being there at the other end.''

Before McCullum had his big moment, Neesham had his own, bringing up a hundred on test debut.

It will probably be more remembered for its trivia value, much in the same way Vaughan Brown's dismissal of Geoff Lawson still has currency.

For some reason, everyone has decided to focus on Richard Hadlee's nine for 52 that day instead.

Neesham also combined in a fabulous 179-run stand with McCullum and was undefeated on 137 when New Zealand declared.

The 23-year-old all-rounder boasts a career test average of 170. That has become another source of humour for Neesham.''

It is all downhill from here. Hopefully, I can have a slower decline rather than a faster one.''
