Cricket: Otago seeking new coach

Otago has begun the hunt for a new coach.

Former coach Vaughn Johnson resigned in March after he admitted making some bad decisions around his finances that reflected poorly on the Otago Cricket Association.

His assistant, Nathan King, filled in for the remainder of the season and indicated when interviewed last month that he was likely to apply for the role. It is standard practice to advertise the position, and an advertisement popped up on the association's website this week.

The successful applicant will be responsible for leading the Volts in the Plunket Shield, HRV Cup and Ford Trophy tournaments.

''The side has had success in recent years and is looking for someone to continue this and help the team fulfil their potential to become the premier domestic cricket team in New Zealand,'' the advertisement reads.

''Getting the best out of players and the team is paramount and the successful candidate will need to demonstrate previous success in developing elite players and making full use of analysis technology and other current tools of a working high-performance environment.''

Otago has enjoyed a lot of coaching stability in recent times. Black Caps coach Mike Hesson held the role for six years, before Johnson followed him and led the side for the best part of three seasons.

Before that, Glenn Turner coached Otago for four seasons.

Applications close at 4pm on May 5.
