Jesse Ryder will miss four - perhaps five - one-day fixtures for Otago this season.

In June, the talented left-hander signed for the Melbourne Renegades, and he is expected to join the team on January 8.

If the Renegades make the final of the Big Bash, scheduled for January 28, Ryder will be unavailable for the preliminary finals of the New Zealand domestic one-day competition.

''I have to clarify this with Jesse. But when we were consulted back in June, it was that he was going to be available for them from about January 8 through to the finals,'' Otago Cricket Association chief executive Ross Dykes said.

''Now we've got the draw finalised, he will potentially miss four games of the Ford Trophy. Should [the Renegades] make the final, he might miss our preliminary final.''

Ryder is expected to be available for Otago's first four one-day games. While it is not ideal, Dykes said Ryder had the right to earn a living and had consulted Otago cricket before making his decision.

The former Black Cap is in England playing for Essex at the moment and has been making an impact with the ball more than the bat.

In 11 division two County Championship games, he has taken 38 wickets at an average of 19.50, including three five-wicket bags. He has scored just one century, though, and is averaging a relatively modest 30.

He has had more success with the blade in the Royal London One Day Cup, scoring 369 runs at an average of just over 92.

In the T20 Blast, he has scored 317 runs at a strike rate of 163 and taken seven wickets at an economy rate of 8.92.
