New Zealand cruised to a seven-wicket win in its opening women's twenty20 fixture against the West Indies in Kingstown yesterday.

Following a superb performance with the ball from Morna Nielsen, who took three for 11, the White Ferns restricted the West Indies to 92 for six.

The touring side made easy work of its target, an unbeaten 44 from Rachel Priest steering the White Ferns to a convincing win after 17.5 overs.

Having won the toss and opted to bowl, the White Ferns were on target early with two quick wickets, including the key scalp of the dangerous Deandra Dottin (1).

Stafanie Taylor held things together for the West Indies, though, making 43 and combining with Britney Cooper (20) to elevate the home side to a potentially defendable total.

Nielsen, in particular, had made it tough for the West Indies with the ball, although she was ably backed up by Sophie Devine (two for 12) and Holly Huddleston (one for seven).

The White Ferns had to overcome an early hiccup in their response when captain Suzie Bates fell for a duck.

Her opening partner, Priest, was in full control, though, and found a willing partner in Devine (24) to put the White Ferns in a strong position.

Devine and Sara McGlashan (nine) fell in the late stages of the innings, but alongside Katie Perkins (13 not out), Priest led her side to a comfortable win with 13 balls remaining.

It was a much-needed win for the White Ferns, who were swept 4-0 by the West Indies in the one-day series.

The next twenty20 is tomorrow morning.

The Northern Knights yesterday slumped to their first defeat of the Champions League twenty20 tournament, going down by 86 runs to the Hobart Hurricanes at the Chhattisgarh International Stadium in Raipur.

A strong finish to the Hurricanes innings lifted them to 178 from their twenty overs.

The Knights innings never got under way.

Scott Styris and Tim Southee were the only batsmen to reach double figures and the side was eventually all out for 92 in the 17th over.
