Albion made a bright start to the season with a comprehensive nine-wicket win at Culling Park over a Taieri side which is rebuilding.

Taieri 142 lost to Albion 143/1 by nine wickets.

Otago spinner Nick Beard (three for 31) and Daniel Ingham (three for 22) were the chief destroyers as Taieri crashed to be all out for a modest 142.

Only Matt McCallum (28) and Dwayne Weir (26) made any meaningful contribution to the score.

Former Central Districts seamer Roald Badenhorst bowled well in his first outing for Albion, taking two for 26 from seven overs, and Michael Snedden was solid with one from 12 from five overs.

Black Caps and Otago strike bowler Neil Wagner batted at No 3 and whacked an undefeated 53, while Jamie Glenn also posted a half century. The chase took just 19.3 overs.

Otago Country 244 for eight beat Kaikorai 130 by 114 runs

Jonathan Homer scored an unbeaten century to help Otago Country post a comfortable victory against Kaikorai at Molyneux Park in Alexandra.

His innings of 104 included three sixes and eight fours and came off 142 deliveries. Blake Buttar-Scurr chipped in with 42 down the order to help Country reach 244 for eight.

Josh Finnie was perhaps the pick of the bowlers with two for 43 from his allotment of 10 overs.

Ryan Duffy made 43 at the top of the order for Kaikorai but his side failed to form any significant partnerships. Shammika Rodrigo whacked 35 from 32 deliveries to add some respectability. But his side's total of 130 was well shy.

Right-arm medium pacer Kieran Parker accounted for most of the wickets to fall. He took a career-best six for 20 from his 10 overs.

North East Valley 102 lost to Carisbrook-Dn 103/3 by seven wickets

Carisbrook-Dunedin banked six points with a seven-wicket win against North East Valley at Kensington Oval.

Valley batted first but could only muster 102. Isaac Gutschlag top-scored with just 17. Extras made the next biggest contribution with 15.

The wickets were shared around with Chris Ware nabbing three for 30, Brad Rodden two for 10 and Rhys Phillips two for 28.

Carisbrook reached the paltry target with more than 31 overs remaining and for the cost of three wickets. The Eathornes - Kieran 15, Nick 23 and Sean 6 not out - contributed about half the runs and Michael Higgins top-scored with 35 not out.

University-Grange 211 lost to Green Island 212/3 by seven wickets

Green Island made a statement in its opening game with a seven-wicket win against University-Grange at Kensington Oval.

Grange batted first and got through to 211. Otago all-rounder Sam Wells top-scored with 42 and Brenton Thompson added 39.

Veteran left-armer Bradley Scott bowled a tidy spell, taking four for 31 from 10 overs, and Mark Joyce three for 34 was also impressive.

What seemed a reasonable total was polished off with ease. Greg Croudis scored 87 from 93 at the top of the order and Black Caps opener Hamish Rutherford swatted 54 from 35 deliveries before offering a catch.

Callum Stewart was the only Grange bowler to avoid an absolute pummelling.
