Cricket: De Boorder's batting central to Valley's comfortable win

North East Valley 160 for three beat Taieri 156 by seven wickets.

Otago wicketkeeper-batsman Derek de Boorder guided North East Valley to a comfortable seven-wicket win with a devastating knock.

The former Otago captain has looked in fine touch in the nets and whacked three sixes and 10 fours in an undefeated innings of 84 from just 53 deliveries. He had good support from Dominic Thompson, who added 44.

Earlier, Taieri had managed a modest score of 156, with Valley opening bowler Keegan Harrison snapping up four wickets for 28 runs. Veteran legspinner Simon Murley picked up two for 20.

Kaikorai 272 beat University-Grange 200 by 72 runs

Kaikorai opener Ryan Duffy enhanced his chances of adding to his two first-class appearances for Otago with a rapid century.

The right-hander basically scored at a run a ball, reaching 109 from 112 deliveries before offering a catch. He swatted five sixes and nine fours in his two-hour stint at the crease to help his side post a competitive 272.

Otago batsman Iain Robertson chipped in with a rapid half century, smashing 53 from 33 deliveries.

Michael Haddleton was the most successful of the Grange bowlers with four for 48.

The chase got off to a reasonable start, with Matt McCormick adding 42 and Brenton Thompson also scoring 42. But Grange struggled to put partnerships together and could only muster 200.

Duffy picked up McCormick's wicket and completed a wonderful day with three for 33 to go with his century.

Albion 240 for eight beat Green Island 203 by 37 runs

Albion moved into a share of the lead following a tight victory against the defending champion, Green Island.

Batting first, former Central Districts all-rounder Roald Badenhorst got Albion off to a useful beginning with 59 from 71 balls.

He tweaked his knee, though, and did not bowl. Otago spinner Nick Beard (59 from 73) and Felix Page guided their side to 240 for eight.

Page, who came in at No8, batted beautifully, hitting three fours and three sixes in an undefeated 59 from 41 deliveries.

It proved to be a critical moment in the match.

Albion strike bowler Michael Snedden produced a fine spell, taking three for 26 from 10 overs. He picked up a key wicket in Gregor Croudis for a duck.

Fellow opener Nathan Watt proved harder to pry for the crease. He top-scored with 63, while Bradley Scott (30) and Russell Ritchie (29) played useful cameos.

Otago Country 293 beat Carisbrook-Dunedin 260 by 33 runs

Otago Country's preparation for the Hawke Cup goes well - very well. Country is two from two following a solid 33-run win against Carisbrook-Dunedin.

Country reached 293 on the artificial surface at Dunstan High School thanks largely to a superb opening stand from Liam Cotton and Fraser Wilson.

The pair combined for a stand of 132, with Cotton adding 56 and the captain 74. Both scored close to a run a ball and provided their side a wonderful platform. Sean Windle whacked 36 from 21 and Kyle Paterson 21 from 19.

Rhys Phillips was the pick of the bowlers with three for 41 from 10 overs, and Tom Rutherford took four for 60.

Otago batsman Brad Rodden top-scored for Carisbrook with 82 and Sean Eathorne (44) and Tim McCormick (39) kept their side in the hunt.

But the scoreboard pressure prove too much. Adam Hubber grabbed three for 41 and Windle three for 54.
